Thursday Thereabouts

Currently reading...

People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks. I found this book on the book club shelves at the South Jordan library. The plot is fascinating. It is tracing the origins of a Hebrew text from 1996 into the past. Right now I am in the year 1609. It is dedicated For The Librarians and has the quote that I love "There, where one burns books, one in the end burns men" (Heinrich Heini).

The Long Walk by Slavomir Rawicz. This book is profoundly moving and I can hardly bear to put it down. During WWII Russians captured many they considered to be traitors and sent them to labor camps in northern Siberia. This story is about the escape of some prisoners and their "trek to freedom."

The Best of the Tales from the Reading Room by Litlove. A collection of essays from a favorite blog that I follow.

Finished with...

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Maurel Spark. I found this book to be very interesting. It was written in 1916 (I think). I usually read comtemporary fiction so this was a nice change for me. I believe I will read some more of Spark's writings.

You're Never Nanny in this Town Again by Suzanne Hansen. I enjoyed this light, fun read. Nothing amazingly substancial, but a nice filler book.

Map for Lost Lovers by Nadeem Aslam. I gave up. I just couldn't get into it and have tons of other books waiting for me, so I just moved on.

Tempted to start...

My Lousiana Sky by Kimberly Willis Holt. This is the book for the book club Brooke and I go to which meets next Tuesday night.

The Camel Bookmobile by Masha Hamilton. I need to reread this book for our book club next week.

CURRENTLY READING:

Why We Make Mistakes, How We Look Without Seeing, Forget Things in Seconds, and Are All Pretty Sure We Are Way Above Average by Joseph T. Hallinan - Very interesting! I am learning lots and will hopefully be able to apply it so that I can truly become way above average. lol

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath - I read love her writing style and voice.

The Camel Bookmobile - just barely started but thought I'd get it read BEFORE we meet - always a good thing.

FINISHED READING:

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis - Great reread. I enjoy this book and pick up on something new every time I read it.

The 5000 Year Leap by W. Cleon Skousen - A great read! I wish every elected official (and maybe every voter) were required to read this book as the U.S. Constitution.

The Secret Life of CeeCee Wilkes by Diane Chamberlain - The author reminds me of Jodi Picoult. It was tender story about youthful mistakes and regret.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shafer - For all the hype it's received, I can't say I really enjoyed this one. It was only okay. There were too many characters for any real character development and no plot. I did enjoy the historical aspects of the book and learned some new things about WWII.

TEMPTED TO START:

Pretties by Scott Westerfield - I enjoyed his book "Uglies" and this is the sequel.

Oops - The 5000 year Leap should have read "as well as the U.S. Constitution". It makes more sense that way.
