Fairy Tales

I know that the original fairy tales differ quite a bit from the Disney versions. Originally fairy tales were usually told at the pub after work when children where in bed. They were coarser and rougher than what our children see now. I was trying to find a site that talked about this. I found one, but it had a ton of language, so I am refraining from referring it here.

Steve and I watched the movie The Brothers Grimm a while ago. In fact, there is a good chance Steve owns it. I found the movie highly creepy and disturbing, but there is a high possiblity that it is a more accurate portrayal of the original tales.

Oh, I just found a better site! Still gruesome, but not language problems. It is interesting to see the differences from the versions we know to the original ones.

You're right, the orginal stories were more gruesome. They were meant as morals or warning stories to (sometimes) scare children. We've talked about it in my English classes. For instance, Little Red Riding Hood is like an allegory for girls protecting their virtue and the wolf is men who take advantage of them. (No idea what the Grandma represents...) Anyway, I have the Brother's Grimm stories, the non-edited, and it's pretty neat.
