So much of what I see reminds me of something I read in a book, when shouldn't it be the other way around? (Meg Ryan in You've Got Mail).

animals in captivity
I thought it was very interesting when Pi was talking about the zoo he grew up with. He spend many pages talking about animals in captivity such as a zoo. He made an appeal that these animals are not unhappy and may even be better off in captivity than FREE. I thought his arguments were fascinating. Do you agree or disagree with him?
I have never thought animals in captivity were better off but I do think Pi made some very compelling arguments. I guess I still think animals are better off in their natural habitat. They may not be as "safe" but "safe" is not always best. Are they really living? As a human I have to ask myself, would I trade really living and having freedom for being totally safe? I'm fairly conservative but would still choose freedom and the ability to live my life as I choose. Thus, I think that's probably best for animals as well.
I never did like the idea of Zoos either, but like Marvel said, Pi made some great arguments. I don't think I'd choose safety over freedom, but then I'm not an animal I'm a person with emotional and intellectual differences from animals. I wouldn't say all animals should be in zoos or all should be free, but I am no longer uncomfortable about animals in zoos as long as they are well taken care of.
