Last school year Brooke and I went a mother/daughter book club at the library. It is for girls 8 to 12 (7 year olds are allowed). At the book club we would talk about the book and then do an activity and have a treat related to the book. The club was held at the South Jordan library and meet the 4th Tuesday of every month. Brooke and I really enjoyed going. After the book club we would always stay at the library, browse the books, and check out a ton of books.
Every month when I was ready to start a new book for the club I would think - "Oh, great. I have to read another young adult book. They are so boring and I won't enjoy it." And EVERY month I was wrong. I really have no idea why I kept thinking that. I KNOW that young adult books are wonderful. I always thought they would be so full of fluff with no real meat to them, but that also is inaccurate. A good young adult book is realistic and has life issues in them, just at a more basic simple level. I enjoyed every book that we read. Granted some I loved, while others I just liked. Here is the list of books Brooke and I read. (I ** the ones I loved.)
Allie Finkel's Rules for Girls: Moving Day by Meg Cabot **
Nim's Island by Wendy Orr
A Long Way From Chicago by Richard Peck
Matilda by Roald Dahl
My Chocolate Year by Charlotte Herman
Half Magic by Edward Eager
How to Steal a Dog by Barbara O'Connor **
My Louisiana Sky by Kimberly Willis Holt **
Brooke and I (and now Sadie) are very excited for this year's upcoming library book club.
