Summary: "When Creel's aunt sacrifices her to a dragon, Creel refuses to wait for a knight to rescue her. After bargaining for her escape and winning a pair of blue slippers from the dragon's hoard, Creel sets out to find her own furtune in the king's city." (back cover of book)
Review: Creel goes to the king’s city wearing an enchanted pair of blue slippers. However, she does not know they are enchanted. Creel has learned amazing embroidery skills from her mother and obtains work in a dress shop. Before being employed though she meets one of the princes. The second son of the king named Luka helps her find lodging and her employment.
Creel does not find happiness in the dress shop. The shop owner likes to claim the girl’s patterns and designs as her own. Creel makes very little money and feels even more tied down than before. The setting is ripe for Creel to venture out on her own. The final straw happens when another employee steals Creel’s magic slippers and gives them to the future princess.
Very quickly the whole town realizes the slippers are magic and that the wearer of them can control dragons. Now Creel must fight to rescue the dragons from their enhancement as well as protect the people of her country.
Although the plot of this book may be a bit predictable, it is still a wonderful book. The many unusual and creative details woven throughout story make for an enjoyable read. This book is the first in a series of three novels.
My daughters and I attend a mother-daughter book club at our local library once a month. This is the book we are reading in September and the author of the book will be present to talk to us. I think it will be a fun evening.
