May book recommendations

I have held off recommending this book because I thought I might want to use it as a book we read together for book club, but I have since decided probably not. So here is a great recommendation: The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith. Please do not be put off by the title, the picture on the cover, or by reading about it. Just read it! It was not like anything I had read before, but I loved it. There are ten in the series so far and I thought I was all caught up except for the last book, but alas I am not, which actually is happy news because now I have more books to read!

Smith has also written 3 other series: The Portuguese Irregular Verbs series, The 44 Scotland Street series, The Isabel Dalhousie novels. I think I will go try out some of these other series.

Second recommendation for May is emotionally difficult, in part because it is true and happening now. So be aware before you get started. A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah. I really enjoy memoirs and especially those concerning current issues. This is an amazing read. If you enjoy this book, I can recommend other books/movies that are along the same lines.
